With the events of the most recent Sunday, I have become depressed, angry, emotionally destitute, and cut off from people. 49 people of the community I feel safest in have been torn from this world.
As close-knit as our community is, each of those 49 people is like a dagger to the heart.
How do you cope with loss and grieving?

I feel with you, this was a horrible attack on humanity's feelings of progress and in general. Everyone grieves in his or her won way. Just don't let it overwhelm or consume you, otherwise the horror makes even more victims. Stay strong.

It's infuriating to see some Christian pastor boast how "49 sinners (or whatever his awful choice of words) less" is great news.
It's touching to see the long lines of people waiting for their turn to donate blood, and those coming over to hand out water and food - including Muslims and Christians.
Such a stark difference in opinion, upbringing, and the way people measure the value of human life.
I'm worried too. It's frightening to think this place people considered a safe heaven, a venue where they could be themselves, was robbed of that status in the most horrifying way. United we stand for peace and love - violence is not the answer, and hate and bigotry have no place in our society.

Is this about the shooting? If so, yeah, some people are plain unhinged to the point of casting aside the value of human life. What you should always believe in is that not everyone is like that. Always. Sure, times change and we may have less security. But at the end of the day we still need mental support from each other. Never let that down on those who may need it even more than you do.

As an update, I still break down into sobs. But my husband has been helping me by getting me out of the apartment and friends both in an out of the community have been calling or visiting. I have been checking in with a few of my friends who have been taking this as hard as I have. Our Pride starts next weekend and thousands of people are expected.

Time heals all wounds.... even the really deep ones.. the pain and loss of people u love and care about seems like its never gonna heal.. but it will.. hold close the ones u love and love u in return..youll always carry the scar and ull never forget. HATE, ANGER, and the lack of the most powerful emotion of all LOVE.. is what fuels these senseless acts of terror and violence. Dont feed the beasts.. To solve the problem everyone should be focus on the Why people are wanting to do these things instead of the How our they doin them.. instead they immediately point to the weapons like guns and things that have been around for over a hundred years.. For every weapon u try to take away or condemn another will take its place... if not guns then bombs, if not bombs then poison, if not any of those then something else...u cant cure a disease just by treating the symptoms... it will just keep spreading.. My heart and prayers go out to all the friends and families of the lives that were lost..

No ma'am. u misunderstood me..its not a Gun issue at all and thats what I was trying to say... thats also how sensitive it is in peoples minds i type Gun or Bomb and conculsions get drawn and nothing else I say is even acknowledge..but after such a tragedy I can understand y. I dont care if they were to outlaw all of them aor if everybody started carrying them... neither scenario would solve anything... ITS a Hate, Anger, and No LOVE for oneself or fellow mankind issue. Its never gonna stop if we as a society cant figure out how to refocus the Hate into Love for one another.. the weapon used is irrelevant just like it was on 9/11.. lives were destroyed for senseless reasons.. im very sorry if I said something u felt was wrong.

I am aware politics, and to a certain level social issues, are not allowed on this forum, (and indeed this whole thread wasn't about guns, but about the lives taken and the impact this attack has on the gay community, and society as a whole) but I will say this about the matter; why would civilians have a need to carry around an AR15? It's a weapon used for warfare. It's a weapon used by the military. This is not a rifle you take out when hunting deer. www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/06/12/orlando-shooting-gunman-omar-mateen-used-ar-15-assault-rifle-to/The AR15 has been used during the most notorious mass shootings on US soil. That's no longer coincidence. I strongly encourage people who feel civilians should have access to weapons capable of injuring and killing hundreds of people at a time to read this article, detailing what happened that night: www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/jun/18/orlando-nightlcub-shooting-pulse-florida-attack-timelineIt's shocking Congress has had four bills presented to them, and all were voted down. Four bills to have better background checks and protect the (American) people. Do you know what happens in Europe when another news story of a mass shooting in the US breaks? We sigh, shake our heads and think, "those yanks just don't get it." And we're hardly surprised. Because nothing changes. We follow the developments and see what's being done - which is nothing. It's not to say people don't have access to weapons when there's a ban, or strict background checks. But it's more difficult to get hands on weapons and ammunition, and that's the reason we have very few of these attacks - the Paris terror attacks being a notable exception (and several terror plots foiled before the terrorists could execute their plans). Remaining vigilant is something we all must do, all across the world; and yes, it's not the gun itself that kills people, it's the man or woman using the gun who's doing the killing. But by restricting access to these ridiculous, unneeded guns, rifles and other weapons you're making it a lot harder for the "bad guys" to inflict as much damage as they have done so far.

Though as an admin I must stress to keep the politics out of this, as a human being I cannot do otherwise but wholeheartedly agree with Neelis. This is a gun issue. There is a reason this sort of thing barely happens in other civilized countries but it's getting increasingly (and alarmingly) commonplace in the USA. Gun legislation in America would be laughable, if the results weren't so shocking. President Obama is doing the right thing by trying to secure tighter laws against guns. Too bad doing the right thing makes him unpopular in his own country...
Now let's get back to mourning and ignoring politics. I can see this thread quickly degenerating into a heated debate at this rate.

My post wasnt to spark any debate or politics this isnt the place for that or something i want to even get into...im sorry for how it was interpreted.. it was simply to state my sorrow for all those lost in Orlando and to say we should question whats causing the sickness in the minds of these people to make them want to do such horrible things in the first place...An I was thinking ahead and my mind last night was in the mindset that its just a matter of time before it happens again and nothing is really being done prevent it at all...and its a very serious concern for me...once again i am sorry for everything and I didnt mean to say anything inappropriate or hurtful...

Thanks for your private message, 82bstewart. I stand corrected, I assumed the AR15 was a military weapon, it seemed to be presented as such in news reports. (I did read interviews with veterans and military staff who explained these weapons should not be available for civilians, due to their firepower.) And I understand your viewpoints as well, they are not that different from mine.
In the end, we all agree that what happened was a horrible tragedy which shouldn't have taken place.
